5 Essential Tips to Maintain Your Stone Surfaces

At StoneRepair, we understand that your stone surfaces—whether they’re benchtops, floors, or outdoor features—are a major investment. With proper care, they can last for decades, maintaining their beauty and durability. In this post, we’ll walk you through five essential maintenance tips that will keep your stone surfaces looking their best year after year.

1. Regular Cleaning with the Right Products

Stone is a natural material, and harsh chemicals can cause more harm than good. To maintain its natural beauty, it’s important to use pH-neutral cleaning products specifically designed for stone surfaces.

  • Do: Use a soft cloth or mop with warm water and a mild stone cleaner.

  • Don’t: Avoid using vinegar, bleach, or acidic cleaners, as they can damage the surface.

For daily cleaning, simply wipe down stone benchtops with a microfiber cloth. For stone floors, sweeping or vacuuming regularly will remove debris that can scratch the surface.

2. Seal Your Stone Surfaces

Sealing is one of the best ways to protect your stone surfaces from stains and wear. Over time, the natural porousness of stone can allow liquids to penetrate and cause staining. By applying a high-quality stone sealer every 6-12 months, you can ensure your stone stays protected.
At StoneRepair, we offer professional stone sealing services to give your surfaces maximum protection and enhance their longevity.

3. Protect Against Scratches and Chips

Stone surfaces, while durable, can be susceptible to scratches and chips if not properly cared for.

  • In the kitchen: Use cutting boards instead of placing knives or sharp objects directly on the benchtop.

  • Furniture: Place felt pads under heavy furniture or appliances that sit on stone floors to prevent scratches.

Regular inspections can help you identify small chips or cracks before they become larger issues. Our experts at StoneRepair can easily address these minor damages to prevent further deterioration.

4. Clean Spills Immediately

Certain substances can cause staining on stone surfaces if left unattended. This is especially true for porous stones like marble or limestone, which can absorb liquids quickly.

  • Red wine, coffee, and oil are some of the most common culprits. As soon as you notice a spill, blot it (don’t wipe) with a soft cloth and clean the area with a pH-neutral cleaner.

If the stain has already set, StoneRepair offers specialized stain removal services to bring your stone back to its pristine condition.

5. Schedule Professional Maintenance

While regular at-home care is essential, professional maintenance will keep your stone looking its best.
At StoneRepair, we recommend scheduling professional services such as polishing, resealing, or restoration at least once every year. We use advanced techniques and equipment to enhance the natural beauty of your stone and repair any damage that may have occurred over time.
